Man Oh Man Monday No. 10 | Father's Day Edition No. 02

Happy Monday to you!  A quick card and post today as allergies have pinned me to the mat.

This card is all about using tons of different stamps that catch your fancy to create a background that says a lot about the awesome dad in your life.  To finish off the panel I simply stamped out "dad" with an alphabet stamp set (inking the edges) and added it to the background using dimensional adhesive.

For more interest I added the stamped panel at an angle and curled up the edges (under the edges I also added some dimensional adhesive).

That's it for Man Oh Man this Monday.  Have a rad week!

Happy creating,
Shay.

Man Oh Man Monday No. 9 | Father's Day Edition 01

Today is the first MOMM focusing on Father's Day. Today's card is traditional in color, design and pattern so it can easily be given to a grandpa too.  I have a thing for travel related anything.  I can't seem to pass up maps, planes, air mail iconography on fabric, stamps, papers and elements.  Perhaps this has to do with so many good memories travelling in the car.  I still love car rides, plane trips, boat expeditions and travel excursions.  I think travel themes are a natural fit with guys too.  I know the male members of my family all have affection for one type of vehicle or other or just in travel in itself.  You will see this theme come up time and time again from me.  I just can't help it!

When I thought about making a Father's Day card I pulled out some of my travel themed stamps from Tim Holtz.  Nearly all Tim Holtz products are a crafty gal's best friend when you need to make some testosterone enriched cards.  In particular I grabbed the Travel Labels stamp set.

I really love creating backgrounds with stamps.  Using the larger Fiskars stamp press and all of the stamps from the stamp set I created a pattern that I stamped in Versamark upon a piece of patterned paper from the He Said She Said He Said 6x6 paper pad.  I then heat embossed the images with clear embossing powder.

This is when I pulled out my Distress Inks.  You can't go wrong with some Distress Inks and ink blending tool.  There is fun to be had (I don't get out much obviously) in seeing the images being revealed as more and more ink is placed on the paper and the embossing powder resists the ink.

I wrapped some ecru crochet cotton around the resist panel and attached a round tag that I stamped with a sentiment from Fillable Frames #4 using some Hero Arts pool ink.

I finished off the card by adhering the resist panel with dimensional adhesive to a piece of patterned paper from the same 6x6 paper pad and then a kraft card base.

MOMM Tips:
MOMM Tip No. 1: Go with Tim Holtz.  Products designed by a man with a man's sensibility.
MOMM Tip No. 2: Customize pattern paper.  Heat emboss on patterned paper for a new look that is perfect for your project.

So there you have our first MOMM Father's Day card.  I'll be back next week with another card to inspire you to tackle your father's day cards.

Happy creating,
Shay.

I decided to make a little gift of notecards that can be given to your mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, friend or another mother figure in your life for this upcoming Mother's Day.

My color palette and the papers I chose are funky and bold with a dash of fun thrown in for good measure.  No shrinking violets here!

What I love about this project is that we all have so much patterned paper, colored cardstock and inks that we can easily make this for anyone and customize it to suit their taste in a short amount of time for practically any occasion.  Need a hostess gift?  No problem.  Need a gift for your child's teacher?  Not an issue at all.  A neighbor is moving away?  Send them off which this gift to keep in touch!  Meeting with a friend who is going through a rough patch?  This makes a thoughtful gift to show you care.  Going to a wedding shower?  Make a batch of these up to match the wedding colors/theme and add the bride's new initials so she can send out personalized thank you notes.

I wanted to show you a very simple version that you can use as a jumping off point.  I stamped the flower with leaves from Flower Power or Floral in Versamark on a piece of blue cardstock and attached it to a larger sheet of patterned paper.  I mixed it up by using several different sheets of patterned paper from the same collection pack.  You can make dozens of these in no time.  For more interest simply heat emboss the image or stamp a word, name or initials over the image using any number of Paper Wings Production's alphabets like Perfect Alphabet, Funky Alphabet or Whimsical Solid Alphabet.

For the envelope I stamped the floral border from Kind Words or Moments on the back flap and also on the bottom of the front of the envelope as well as used the frame from Life Framer for the address and again stamped the flower with leaves image from Flower Power or Floral.

Next I stamped all the little flowers from Flower Power and Single Flowers in matching inks on some mailing seals and added the sentiment from Sophie over each one in brown ink.  I love the mailing seal as it adds a sweet little touch to an envelope.

We all know how important packaging a gift is...it makes all the difference.  To package my notecard set I reused clear packaging that I then wrapped in three layers of strips of patterned paper.  The bottom layer is punched with a daisy border punch and the top strip stamped with the floral border from Kind Words or Moments.  I finished it up with a bow cut from another piece of patterned paper.  I must admit I really adore the bow.

Now it's time for your next hop on this parade of flowers.  Make sure to head on over to Carrie's blog next!

Man Oh Man Monday No. 8 (on Tuesday)

Hello and happy Monday...er Tuesday rather!  Great to have you visit again for another installment of Man Oh Monday.  Coming up in June is one of the mega man holidays: Father's Day.  In honor of such an auspicious holiday I have decided to dedicate all of May's Man Oh Man Mondays to Father's Day.  I hope you will join me in celebrating the fathers and father figures in our lives in May!

Now on to today's cards (again rated Easy Going):

I was inspired by Papertrey Ink's Make It Monday #114 video by Dawn McVey to create a couple of cards using the Star Gazer Additions stamp set.  I chose to use Distress Markers for my cards, but if you have reinkers, watercolors, Distress Stains or Distress Paints this could work just as well.  You could even use the ink pad themselves in much the way I used the markers.  I used the markers in two different ways for these cards.

**Of note is that after I colored these images I let them dry overnight under a heavy object to help them to dry flat, but I placed them under a plastic object which meant they still were not completely dry so they are "artistic" and not flat.  If you prefer flat put them under a heavy non-plastic object perhaps even wrapped in water absorbent paper towels.  Just sayin'.

Card No. 1 | Simple Version

I white heat embossed the large image from Star Gazer Additions.  I scribbled the markers onto the Inkssentials Non-Stick Craft Sheet and then liberally sprayed the ink with water and picked up the color with a paint brush and dropped big drops over the image and then used the straw to blow the color in different directions.  I also flicked (best adjective I can think of and you may want to put a tarp over cover your work surface to avoid drops of color being everywhere!) smaller drops of color over the image and cardstock.

I added the panel to a piece of pewter cardstock and added a sentiment strip using dimensional adhesive.

Okay, I have to admit that the torn bottom of this card is purely accidental...an adhesive mishap which I decided to just go with and sort of supports the whole tie-dyed Seattle circa 1992 grunge look,  I am sure tie-dying came about in much the same serendipitous way.

Card No. 2 | Flashy Version

I gold heat embossed the large image from Star Gazer Additions.  I used the markers to color in the image directly.  I then used the paint brush to drop water onto the image (remember that Distress products are reactive to water...cool stuff!) and used the straw to blow the water in different directions.

I added the sentiment strip which was bordered by some gold (the color is actually brown sugar which I often prefer to the real gold color) glitter tape and added some wood veneer stars for added embellishment (confession: the wood veneer stars were a clever ruse to cover the fact that the top star from the sentiment didn't quite fit on my white strip).

The card base was painted with some of the Distress Markers and water.

MOMM Tips:
MOMM Tip No. 1: Mix It Up.  Use the same products for different results.
MOMM Tip No. 2: Go For It.  Add that dash of drama.  A little gold is appreciated.

That {finally} concludes this week's MOMM.

If you have any suggestions or questions regarding the upcoming focus on Father's Day, just leave me a comment!  See you next week for our first MOMM Father's Day special.

Happy creating,
Shay.

Papertrey Ink's April 2013 Blog Hop: Tilted

Welcome, welcome, welcome!  A bit a redundant, but I think I made you feel welcome, right?  I am so happy to have you visit today for my take on April 2013 Papertrey Ink Blog Hop's theme:

I know that there will be amazing projects featured by you.  Here is what I cooked up:

Card No. 1

First up this handy dandy card using the new Handy Hardware set which is perfect for masculine birthdays, congratulations, encouragement, forgiveness, thank you and father's day.  The inspiration for this card came from the over-the-top-talented Betsy Veldman from this card HERE (see the second card down with the saw?  Yes, that's the one...see the resemblance?).  I stamped planks of wood using Background Basics: Woodgrain on kraft then cut them into 1/2 inch strips, inked the edges and installed them at an angle upon my card.  An even easier version of this card could be made using the Background Basics: Farm & Barn, but unfortunately I don't own that set yet.  Perhaps you do though?  It would be worth a try.  I could also see this done in a weathered wood color scheme.  I love you woodgrain...4ever.

Card No. 2

For my next card I went a different more colorful and feminine route.  I love flowers, but strangely I don't use them all that much.  I could not resist the new Happiness in Bloom set with it's bold and fun florals and then the teardrop border.  Even before I received this stamp set I had designed the card which is very similar in design to the bottom right hand card on the inspiration picture by the always inspirational Maile Belles.  I used Distress Inks with the stamp set to create my border of flowers.  I did a bit of a watercolor effect as Distress Ink fills in better and blends better when sprayed with water.  I also masked off the largest flower so it is in the foreground.  I filled in some of the areas with watered down ink and a paint brush.  For added dimension I used a gray Copic marker around the flowers.  I cut around the bottom of the flowers and added the leaves.  The background was stamped repeatedly in navy.  I have a big crush on navy at the moment.  With dimensional adhesive I adhered the flower section to the card base.

Card No. 3

Then I did another card...clean, simple and graphic this go around.  Diagonal stripes stamped asymmetrically on the top of the card using Background Basics: Super Stripes and finished off with Wonderful Words: Hello die cut from both POW! glitter paper and from a coaster for dimension.  Hello indeed!

Card No. 4

I used the negative block from the POW! glitter paper for the focal point of my last card.  The word was cut out of the paper at an angle.  Behind the glitter paper I stamped the hello from the Wonderful Words: Hello mini stamp set in raspberry fizz.  I adhered the POW! glitter paper using dimensional adhesive and voila it is one dy-no-mite card.
That's it from me.  Thank you so very much for stopping by and I hope to you come visit again soon!

Happy hopping,
Shay.
